A smartphone is a mobile phone built on a mobile operating system, with more advanced computing capability and connectivity than a feature phone. The first smartphones combined the functions of a personal digital assistant (PDA) with a mobile phone. Later models added the functionality of portable media players, low-end compact digital cameras, pocket video cameras, and GPS navigation units to form one multi-use device. Many modern smartphones also include high-resolution touchscreens and web browsers that display standard web pages as well as mobile-optimized sites. High-speed data access is provided by Wi-Fi and Mobile Broadband.

I finally made the move to an iPhone and, after the first week, am loving it. This is just a macro of my new favorite stacked on top of a couple of "dead" smartphones gathering dust in a drawer … a Blackberry Curve (which was so-so) and a Palm Treo (which was a terrific phone at the time). A couple of other smartphones I’ve gone through over the years missing from the pile include a Windows-version of a Palm Treo (which was the worst smartphone ever made) and a early Samsung touchscreen, which was a hot item when it came out 10 years ago.

Smartphones have become the handheld of choice due to their many capabilities, but there’s still a use for less-capable basic cell phones.
Granted, the explorer isn’t what I would call the height of chic-ness and design, but it does what it’s meant to do, and does it well
